What a home charger actually does

Fill up at home, on your terms, at the rate you choose

A home charger fits to your wall and connects the car to your home supply. Instead of relying on public chargers, you plug in on your own driveway and the car charges while it's parked — usually overnight, when you're not using much else.

The point isn't just convenience. It's when you charge. Set the charger to run on a cheap off-peak window, or when your panels are producing, and every mile you add comes from your own or the cheapest power — not the standard daytime rate.

Why timing matters

The same charge can cost very different amounts

Electricity isn't one flat price through the day. Charge on a cheap off-peak window or from your own panels and the cost drops; plug in at the day rate every evening and it doesn't. A charger you can time is what lets you pick.

Overnight, off-peak

Set the charger to run in a cheap night-time window. The car fills up while you sleep, on the lowest rate your tariff offers.

From your own solar

Got panels? Top the car up on a sunny day and you're driving on electricity you made yourself, rather than sending it back to the grid cheaply.

Sized to how you drive

Your half-hourly data shows what you already use at home. We factor the car in on top of that, so nothing is guessed.

It works on its own — and works harder with solar

A charger is worth having whether or not you've got panels: an off-peak tariff alone can cut the cost of charging a great deal. If you do have solar, the two pair up well — spare daytime generation that would otherwise go back to the grid for very little can go into the car instead.

We won't pretend every mile will come from the roof. British daylight doesn't always line up with when the car's on the drive. What we will do is show you, from your real data, how much of your charging could realistically come from your own power and how much from a cheap off-peak window.

A charger needs the right tariff behind it to pay off. If your current tariff has no cheap window, we'll say so rather than gloss over it.
